Prayers to Help You Fall Asleep Quickly

The Importance of Sleep in Islam

Before delving into the specific prayers, it is important to understand the role of sleep in Islam. Sleep is considered a blessing and a natural need for the human body. In several verses of the Qur’an, Allah (SWT) reminds us of the importance of rest as a means of rejuvenating the body and soul. It is also a time for the body to recover, and for the mind to relax and be at peace.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught his followers specific rituals to follow before sleep, to ensure that both the body and soul are prepared for the night. These practices include reciting certain duas, making specific dhikr (remembrance of Allah), and following a proper bedtime routine.

1. Reciting Ayat-ul-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255)

One of the most powerful verses in the Qur’an, Ayat-ul-Kursi is a verse from Surah Al-Baqarah that is known for its ability to protect the believer from harm and bring peace of mind. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recommended reciting Ayat-ul-Kursi before sleep to invoke Allah’s protection and blessings for a peaceful night. This verse is known to bring tranquility and is considered a shield against nightmares, fear, and other distractions.

The Dua:

Ayat-ul-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255)
“Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Whoever recites Ayat-ul-Kursi before going to sleep, Allah will appoint a guardian to protect them, and Satan will not come near them until the morning.” (Sunan an-Nasa’i)

2. Reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas (The Three Quls)

Another important set of supplications recommended by the Prophet (PBUH) for a peaceful sleep is the recitation of the three “Quls” – Surah Al-Ikhlas (112), Surah Al-Falaq (113), and Surah An-Nas (114). These short chapters, also known as the “Qul” Surahs, provide spiritual protection from harm and seek Allah’s refuge from evil forces, both visible and unseen.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would often recite these three Surahs before sleep, rubbing his hands together and wiping them over his body as a form of seeking protection and blessings.

The Duas:

  • Surah Al-Ikhlas (112) – “Say, ‘He is Allah, [Who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent.’”
  • Surah Al-Falaq (113) – “Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn, From the evil of that which He created, And from the evil of the darkening when it settles, And from the evil of the witchcrafts when they blow in the knots.’”
  • Surah An-Nas (114) – “Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, The King of mankind, The God of mankind, From the evil of the whisperer who withdraws, Who whispers in the breasts of mankind, Of jinn and among mankind.’”

3. Dua for Protection and Peaceful Sleep

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also recommended a specific dua for seeking peaceful sleep and protection from nightmares or disturbances during the night. This dua invokes the name of Allah, seeking His mercy and protection from all forms of harm, including the evil whispers of Shaytaan.

The Dua:

“Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya.”
Translation: “In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.”

This simple dua should be recited before sleeping. The Prophet (PBUH) used to recite this dua as a way of acknowledging that sleep is a form of death and waking up is a form of resurrection. By invoking Allah’s name, the believer seeks divine protection while they rest.

4. Dua for Removing Anxiety and Restlessness

For those struggling with anxiety or restlessness before bed, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught a prayer that can be recited to calm the heart and mind. This dua is designed to ease the burdens of worry and promote mental clarity and relaxation, helping to facilitate sleep.

The Dua:

“Allahumma inni abduka, wa abnu abdika, wa abnu amatika, nasiyati biyadik, maadhin fiya hukmuka, ‘adlun fiya qadha’uka, as’alu ka bi kulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ‘allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, awista’tarta bihi fi ‘ilmil ghaybi ‘indaka, an taj’ala al-Qur’ana rabi’a qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jala’a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.”
Translation: “O Allah, I am Your servant, the son of Your servant, the son of Your maidservant, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed, and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name which You have, by which You have named Yourself, or which You have revealed in Your Book, or which You have taught to any of Your creatures, or which You have kept hidden in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur’an the delight of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my anxiety.”

5. Reciting the Tasbih (SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar)

Another practice recommended by the Prophet (PBUH) before sleeping is the recitation of Tasbih, which includes saying SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah), Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest). Reciting these praises before sleep is said to bring peace and tranquility to the soul and help prevent the mind from wandering, making it easier to fall asleep.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would recite SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 34 times before sleeping, as a form of dhikr to end the day on a positive and peaceful note.

Sleep is a vital part of life, and in Islam, it is considered a time for rest, reflection, and spiritual renewal. The duas and prayers shared by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) provide a way to not only seek Allah’s protection during sleep but also to help calm the heart and mind, ensuring a peaceful and restful night. By incorporating these simple yet powerful supplications into your nightly routine, you can experience better sleep, enhanced peace of mind, and a stronger connection with Allah.
